Levy UMC in WWII
The organizational date of what is now the Disciples Sunday School Class is now believed to have been on October 4,1953. The class will he 45 years old on October 4,1998, and 50 years old on October 4, 2003.
A search of the historical files still at Levy United Methodist Church resulted in finding three Sunday School record books which recorded each Sunday's attendance in each Sunday School Class and what the Sunday School offering was from each class These record books span the time from June 20, 1948 until June 12, 1955.
These record hooks reveal that the first recording of a class called the 'Young Married' class was on Sunday, October 4, 1953. The number present was 1 teacher and 6 students, and the offering for the day was $8.00. That class continues in these three record books until June 13, 1954 when the attendance was 10 and the offering was $21.50.
The next Sunday, June 20, 1954, is the first recording of the 'Disciples' Sunday School class when the attendance was 10 and the offering was $16.00. The last recording is for Sunday, June 12, 1955, when the attendance was 19 and the offering was $18.50. It is obvious that the 'Young Married' class became the 'Disciples' class. Roy Cullum remembers helping select the name 'Disciples' for the class.
An Interview with Roy Cullum revealed that he and his wife June returned from California in 1946. Roy Cullum was the first teacher of what eventually became the Disciples Class. He does not remember the exact time he began that class however he does remember that it was called theYoung Married Couples Class for a period of time before it was called the Disciples Class. He does remember that some of people who were in the new class did not attend Sunday School anywhere else; however were members of the church. He says that the class at one time met in the kitchen of the old church in 'downtown Levy' (where the Dixie Pig Barbeque is now located). It eventually moved to larger room on the 2nd floor of th remodeled church
